  • The Indian Head Hatchery is located in the Town of Stephenville on the western shore of Newfoundland. The hatchery has been growing Atlantic salmon in this location since 2011.
  • Atlantic salmon are raised at the hatchery in Stephenville for about 1 year until they have become smolt (250 g+) and are then transferred to Mowi sea cages on the south coast of Newfoundland to grow to market size (5 kg).
  • The project was registered in 2018 and we are currently preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • The EIS report will include a record of questions and comments from citizens and stakeholders. The EIS will focus on key issues relating to the effects of the project on both the bio-physical and socio-economic environments, based on EIS Guidelines we were provided. The environmental assessment process ensures that projects proceed in an environmentally acceptable manner.

Salmon Aquaculture on the South Coast of Newfoundland

The Indian Head Expansion Project

Why is Mowi planning this project?

Expansion of the existing Mowi facility in Stephenville will provide a modern, more sustainable Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) for salmon smolt that

  • Uses less water
  • Minimizes wastewater
  • Improves fish welfare
  • Reduces time farmed salmon spend at sea
  • Enhances biosecurity
  • Increases production capacity
  • Provides business stability
  • Increases local economic benefits

These proposed changes in Mowi’s operations will add more than 30 new employees to its operations in Newfoundland and to date has seen ~$86 million invested with >$100 million anticipated by completion. The proposed changes have resulted in the provincial Department of Environment and Climate Change requiring an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Project. An important part of the EIS process is consulting with the public, Indigenous groups, and stakeholders.
